What are the popular file types and how are they used?

EPS

Encapsulated PostScript: A high resolution image stored in the Postscript page description language. The EPS standard enables users to transfer high resolution graphics images between applications.

GIF

Screen display, especially the Web/Online publishing of flat images.

JPEG, JPG

Screen display, especially the Web/Online publishing of photographic images. This is a lossy type of compression and images can look 'jagged'. Proceed with caution when using this format to send files.

PICT

Screen display on Macintosh or printing to non-PostScript printer.

TIFF, TIF

Printing to PostScript printers. High resolution printing of images.

WMF

Screen display under Windows or printing to non-PostScript printer. Transfer vector images via the clipboard.

BMP

Screen display under Windows. Windows Wallpaper.

PSD

Native file format for Photoshop. It's a bitmap program that produces large file sizes.Good for photographic images (continuous tone images). Usually, images worked in Photoshop are saved as Tiff, Jpeg, or Gif. Call us if you have any questions.

AI

Native file format for Illustrator. It's a vector format that will retain scalable information.Good for logo artwork and flat, solid areas of color.

PDF

Portable Document Format or PDF is a file format created by Adobe Systems, Inc. PDF uses the PostScript printer description language and is highly portable across computer platforms.
